Transforming Choice shortlisted for Expert Citizens Award

It’s been a busy week for Carol, Managing Director of Transforming Choice and her team, who provide a residential detox and rehabilitation service based in South Liverpool, designed for people who have become alcohol dependent.

Last Wednesday, Carol, Donna, Transforming Choice’s Operational Manager and two Peer Mentors, Nikki and Peter, attended the Expert Citizens Insight Awards 2018 in Stoke. There Carol was shortlisted for the ‘Leading Others’ Award, presented to those who ‘are leading others in good practice for people with multiple needs. They are setting a benchmark for colleagues to follow and generously passing on the skills and experience that they have developed.’ Sixty people were nominated for the award, highlighting just how impressive this recognition is for both Carol and the organisation. Carol came runner up in the award and was proud to accept it on behalf of the team at Transforming Choice.

Carol explained how it means a lot to receive an award from an organisation that was started and is run by people who have experienced addiction, homelessness and mental ill health because those who have lived experience of complex needs can recognise a good service when they see one.

Of the 15 staff members at Transforming Choice, 12 have either been through the 12-week programme themselves or have other lived experience of alcohol and drug dependency, homelessness and mental ill health. This means that they understand the difficulties service-users face and are better equipped to ‘accompany them along the road to recovery’ and support them in creating their own care plans.

On Monday, the service welcomed a new group of fourteen people. Although the first week can be especially challenging, it marks the start of a potential life-changing 12 weeks for the residents. The programme encourages residents to regain control of their lives and work towards independence. The residents embark on a journey of self-exploration that not only helps to build resilience, it encourages residents to make choices that support a healthier lifestyle and ultimately enables them to deal with whatever life throws at them. The team support the residents to find secure accommodation, meaning they can avoid returning to the cycle of temporary accommodation.

Transforming Choice has exciting plans for the future. With the support of Capacity: The Public Services Lab, they hope to realise their ambition and reach their full potential as they encourage their residents to do the same.
Transforming Choice would like to say a great big thank you to Expert Citizens, their CEO Darren Murinas, and his team for such an enjoyable day.
